Deep autumn color palette

Deep autumn, also called dark autumn, is the darkest of the autumns: warm leaning neutral, deep and rich. It borders winter, so its colors are dark and earthy rather than light and golden: chocolate, oxblood, forest green and dark teal.

  • Chocolate#5C3A21
  • Dark chocolate#3E2718

  • Ochre#B97F17
  • Deep olive#4F5022

  • Rust#8E3B1B
  • Brick red#9B2F22

Chocolate, dark chocolate and dark camel are the everyday neutrals, used where other seasons use black and grey. Tomato red, brick red and rust are strong near the face; forest green, deep olive and dark teal are the deep accents. Dark colors layered together, with one warmer, brighter note such as tomato red or ochre, suit this palette.

What makes it deep autumn

Undertone
Warm, leaning neutral. Deep autumn sits next to deep winter, so its warmth is less golden than true autumn's, but the palette stays warm.
Depth
Deep, and this is the defining trait. The palette is built on dark values; warm cream is the only light color and works as an accent.
Clarity
Medium to rich. Colors are saturated and earthy. Pale pastels and icy colors tend to look washed out on a deep autumn.

Deep autumns often have dark brown to near-black hair, sometimes with a red or warm cast, dark brown or deep hazel eyes, and noticeable depth in their overall coloring, across a wide range of skin tones. These are tendencies, not rules.

Hair colors for deep autumn

These hair colors come from the autumn family, ordered for deep autumn so the darker shades come first: burnt sienna copper, auburn, chestnut brown and chocolate brown. Cinnamon gloss and whiskey copper are lighter options if you want more warmth around the face. Each one opens the shade, so you can try it on your own photo.

Colors to go easy on

  • Optic white#FFFFFF
  • Powder pink#E6C3C8
  • Icy blue#CFE4F2
  • Lavender#C3B6E3
  • Fuchsia#D0308A

Pale, cool and icy colors are the usual mismatch: optic white, powder pink, icy blue, lavender and fuchsia. Next to deep, warm coloring they can look faded or harsh. Near the face, swap optic white for warm cream and pastel pinks for tomato red or rust; further from the face, they matter less.

Close seasons

Deep autumn or deep winter?

Both are dark and share depth as their main trait; the difference is warmth. Deep autumn suits warm, earthy darks like chocolate, olive and rust. Deep winter suits cool, clear darks like navy, emerald and blue red. A practical check is a rust fabric against a burgundy one under your chin in daylight: if rust looks rich and burgundy looks cold, deep autumn is closer; if rust looks muddy, look at deep winter.

Deep winter color palette

Deep autumn or true autumn?

True autumn is lighter and more golden: pumpkin, mustard and camel at mid depth. If those look right on you and the darkest colors look heavy, true autumn is the likelier fit; if pumpkin looks too light and oxblood looks right, deep autumn is closer.

Questions

What colors look best on a deep autumn?

Dark, warm and rich colors: chocolate, dark chocolate, oxblood, mahogany, rust, brick red, tomato red, ochre, deep olive, forest green and dark teal, with warm cream and dark camel as lighter neutrals.

Is dark autumn the same as deep autumn?

Yes. Different color analysis systems use either name for the same season: the autumn with the deepest coloring, which borders deep winter.

What hair color suits a deep autumn?

Deep, warm shades: chocolate or chestnut brown, auburn, mahogany or a dark copper. Pale ash blonde and icy platinum usually lower the depth this season looks best with.

Can a deep autumn wear black?

Often, more easily than the other autumns, because of the depth in their coloring. Near the face, dark chocolate or oxblood can look warmer than black; black trousers or shoes are rarely a problem.
