Bright spring color palette

Bright spring, also called clear spring, is the most vivid of the springs: warm leaning neutral, medium in depth, and very clear. It borders winter, so its colors are saturated and crisp: poppy red, hot coral, kelly green and bright turquoise.

The palette

  • Warm white#FBF6EA
  • Navy#1F2F5C
  • Warm charcoal#3F3B39
  • Poppy red#E8342E
  • Hot coral#FF6157
  • Geranium pink#F0577F
  • Tangerine#FF8A2A
  • Sunflower yellow#FFCF1F
  • Kelly green#20A84E
  • Bright mint#6EDDB2
  • Bright turquoise#00B3AE
  • Aqua#4FD3D6
  • Bright blue#2266D8
  • Violet#7A4CC6

Navy and warm charcoal are the dark neutrals and warm white the light one, and contrast between them suits this palette. Poppy red, hot coral and geranium pink work closest to the face; kelly green, bright turquoise and bright blue are strong accents. One vivid color against a dark neutral looks deliberate; several brights together work too, as long as none of them is greyed.

What makes it bright spring

Undertone
Warm, leaning neutral. Bright spring sits next to bright winter, so it can wear a few cooler brights such as violet and bright blue, but the palette stays warm overall.
Depth
Medium. The palette spans light to dark, with navy and warm charcoal as deep anchors and warm white as the light one.
Clarity
Clear, and this is the defining trait. These are the most saturated colors among the springs. Muted, smoky colors tend to make a bright spring look tired.

Bright springs vary more in natural coloring than the other springs. What they tend to share is clarity: bright eyes (often clear blue, green or topaz), noticeable contrast between hair and skin, and skin that looks lively in strong color. Hair can be anything from golden blonde to dark brown. These are tendencies, not rules.

Hair colors for bright spring

These hair colors come from the spring family, and bright springs wear a wider range than the other springs. The clearest of these, strawberry blonde, honey golden blonde and caramel balayage, are the usual starting points; with darker natural hair, caramel pieces keep more of the contrast this season looks good with than going fully light. Each one opens the shade, so you can try it on your own photo.

Colors to go easy on

  • Dusty rose#C9989E
  • Grey taupe#8F857D
  • Sage#95A398
  • Olive drab#6B6B3A
  • Rust#A84A23

Muted, earthy colors are the usual mismatch: dusty rose, grey taupe, sage, olive drab and rust. Next to clear coloring they look muddy and can make skin look dull. Near the face, swap grey taupe for warm charcoal and dusty rose for geranium pink; further from the face it matters less.

Close seasons

Bright spring or bright winter?

Both seasons are defined by clarity and both suit strong contrast, so this pair is often confused. The difference is undertone. Bright spring leans warm: poppy red, hot coral and sunflower yellow look clean, and warm white looks better than pure white. Bright winter leans cool: hot pink, cobalt and icy colors look clean, and black with pure white is easy. If icy pastels look washed out on you while coral glows, bright spring is the closer match.

Bright winter color palette

Bright spring or true spring?

True spring is warmer and a little softer: golden yellow, orange and apple green in a sunny, golden range. Bright spring is bright first and warm second. If very saturated, slightly cooler brights look right on you and golden colors look a bit flat, bright spring is the likelier fit.

Questions

What colors look best on a bright spring?

Clear, saturated colors with a warm lean: poppy red, hot coral, geranium pink, tangerine, sunflower yellow, kelly green, bright turquoise, aqua, bright blue and violet, with navy, warm charcoal and warm white as neutrals.

Is clear spring the same as bright spring?

Yes. Different color analysis systems use either name for the same season: the spring where clarity is the strongest trait, bordering bright winter.

What hair color suits a bright spring?

Clear, warm shades with some contrast: golden or strawberry blonde, golden brown, or caramel pieces through darker hair. Ashy, smoky shades and flat colors without shine usually work against the palette.

Can a bright spring wear black?

Often, more easily than the other springs, because of the contrast in their coloring. If black looks harsh near the face, navy or warm charcoal give the same dark anchor. Black worn lower down is rarely a problem.
