Light summer color palette

Light summer is the lightest of the summers: cool leaning neutral, light in depth, and soft. Its colors are airy pastels on a cool base: powder blue, lavender, powder pink and cool mint.

  • Light grey#C8C9CC
  • Rose beige#D8BFB6
  • Soft navy#4B5D7E
  • Powder blue#B8D3E8
  • Sky blue#8EC1E6
  • Periwinkle#9AA7E0
  • Lavender#C3B6E3
  • Powder pink#EBC6CD
  • Rose pink#E59AB0
  • Soft watermelon#EE8A98
  • Cool mint#A6DCCB
  • Light aqua#9ED6DA
  • Light teal#64AEB2

Soft white, light grey and rose beige are the everyday neutrals, with soft navy for anything that needs to be dark. Powder pink, rose pink and soft watermelon work closest to the face; powder blue, sky blue and periwinkle are easy everyday colors, and cool mint and light teal add a green note. Light colors paired with each other keep the look airy; one dark, heavy piece next to the face can read as a shadow.

What makes it light summer

Undertone
Cool, leaning neutral. Light summer borders light spring, so its coolness is gentle: pink or neutral beige skin rather than an icy look.
Depth
Light, and this is the defining trait. The palette lives at the light end of the value scale; soft navy and light teal are its deepest colors.
Clarity
Soft. The colors are delicate and a little powdery. Strong, saturated colors tend to overpower a light summer face.

Light summers often have light ash blonde or light ash brown hair, light blue, grey or green eyes, and fair to light skin with a pink or neutral cast, with low to medium contrast. These are tendencies, not rules; what matters is how the colors look next to your face.

Hair colors for light summer

These hair colors usually sit well with light summer: they stay light and lean cool or beige rather than golden. Ice beige, champagne and ash blonde are the closest match, and a shadow root softens the line as hair grows. Platinum is the bold end and mushroom brown the deeper one. Each one opens the shade, so you can try it on your own photo.

Colors to go easy on

  • Black#141414
  • Dark chocolate#3B2418
  • Bright orange#E8771E
  • Mustard#C99A1C
  • Rust#A84A23

Dark, warm and saturated colors are the usual mismatch: black, dark chocolate, bright orange, mustard and rust. Next to light, cool coloring they can look heavy or make skin look sallow. Near the face, soft navy can replace black, and light grey or rose beige can replace brown; away from the face the rules relax.

Close seasons

Light summer or light spring?

Both are defined by lightness, and many people sit near the line between them. The deciding axis is warmth. On a light summer, cool pastels such as powder blue, lavender and rose pink look fresh, while peach and apricot can look orange. On a light spring it is the other way round. Light aqua and a soft off-white sit close to both palettes, so they are a safe middle while you decide.

Light summer or true summer?

True summer is cooler and a little deeper: raspberry, cool blue and plum at medium depth. If those look strong on you and their lighter, more delicate versions look better, light summer is the closer match.

Questions

What colors look best on a light summer?

Light, cool and soft colors: powder blue, sky blue, periwinkle, lavender, powder pink, rose pink, cool mint and light aqua, with soft white, light grey and soft navy as neutrals.

Should a light summer wear gold or silver?

Silver, white gold and platinum usually sit best. Rose gold is a common compromise; heavy yellow gold tends to look strong against light, cool coloring.

What hair color suits a light summer?

Light, cool or beige shades: ash blonde, ice beige or champagne blonde, or pale platinum for a bold change. Brassy gold, copper and very dark colors usually work against the palette.

Can a light summer wear black?

Near the face, black is usually too heavy for light coloring and can make the face look shadowed. Soft navy, slate or light grey give a darker anchor with less weight. Black away from the face is rarely a problem.
