Haircuts for a diamond face

Widest at the cheekbones, with a narrower forehead and a narrow chin. The usual aim is to fill out the forehead and the jaw, so the cheekbones aren't the only wide line.

How to tell if you have a diamond face

On a diamond face the cheekbones are the widest line by a clear margin. The forehead above them is narrower, and the jaw below is narrower still, coming to a small chin. The face is longer than it is wide.

Diamond is easily confused with long and with heart. Next to long, a diamond is shorter and its cheekbones are clearly wider than the forehead and jaw. Next to heart, the difference is the forehead: narrow on a diamond, wide on a heart.

How we measure it

Our tool reads diamond when the length is about 1.2 to 1.45 times the widest line, the forehead is under about 0.85 of the cheekbone width, and the jaw is under about 0.8 of it.

Why these cuts work

Here the width sits in the middle, so cuts add volume above and below it. A fringe or some lift at the hairline fills out a narrow forehead. Layers that start at the chin, or a chin-length bob, add width at the jaw. Tucking the hair behind the ears keeps the cheekbones on show without adding to them.

For men, a fringe or a textured crop does the forehead's part, and some length at the sides keeps the head from narrowing above the cheekbones. Very short, tightly faded sides do the opposite: they make the cheekbones stand out even more.

Beards

What to avoid

Volume that sits right at the cheekbones adds to the widest line. On men, very short or skin-faded sides, a middle part and mutton chops sharpen the contrast at the cheekbones.

Questions

What haircut is best for a diamond face?

Cuts that add width at the forehead and the jaw: a chin-length bob, a pixie with a soft fringe, layers that start at the chin, or a side-swept fringe. For men, a textured crop, a fringe, or a French crop with some length left at the sides.

How do I know if my face is diamond or oval?

Both are a little longer than wide. On an oval face the forehead is only slightly narrower than the cheekbones; on a diamond it's clearly narrower, and the chin is narrow and pointed. In our measurement, a forehead under about 0.85 of the cheekbone width points to diamond.

Do bangs suit a diamond face?

Often, yes. A fringe adds width at a narrow forehead. Soft, side-swept or textured bangs work; for men, a textured fringe or a crop does the same job.
