Haircuts for a round face

About as long as it is wide, with full cheeks and a soft jaw. The usual aim is to add some height and length and keep the sides close.

How to tell if you have a round face

Look straight into a mirror with your hair pulled back. On a round face the length from hairline to chin is close to the width, the cheekbones are the widest part, and the forehead and jaw are about the same width. The jaw curves from ear to chin without a clear corner.

Round is most often confused with square, because both are short and wide. The difference is the jaw: a square jaw has a visible corner where it turns up toward the ear, a round jaw is one smooth curve. A smile widens the cheeks, so judge with a neutral face.

How we measure it

In our tool you mark four lines on your photo. A face reads as round when its length is under about 1.2 times its widest line, the jaw is a little narrower than the cheekbones, and you answer that your jaw corners are soft. If the numbers sit close to a boundary, the result says so and names the next closest shape.

Why these cuts work

Hair changes where the eye stops. Height at the crown and length that falls below the chin draw a longer vertical line, so the face reads less wide. Keeping the sides close to the head, instead of adding volume at the cheeks, works from the other direction.

Angles help too. A side part, a fringe swept to one side, or layers that start below the chin break up the curve of the cheeks. A blunt line that stops right at the cheeks, or full, round volume at the sides, repeats the shape instead.

For men the same idea becomes height on top with tight sides: a quiff, a pompadour or a textured top over a short taper. A common barber's shorthand is to cut a round face as if it were square, adding structure on top and at the temples.

Haircuts that suit a round face

Short
A graduated or layered bob that is longer at the front and ends below the chin.
Medium
A collarbone lob, a shag or a wolf cut, with the first layer below the chin.
Long
Long layers or a long shag, worn with a side part.
Lowest upkeep
Long layers or a collarbone lob, which grow out without losing their shape.

For women

Layers that start below the chin, angled bobs and side-swept fringes.

What to avoid

A blunt cut that ends at the cheeks, a short rounded bob, and volume at the sides all repeat the roundness. On men, wide sides and a full, round beard with thick sideburns add width.

Questions

What haircut is best for a round face?

There is no single best cut, but the ones usually suggested add height and length: long layers that start below the chin, an angled or graduated bob, a side-swept fringe, and for men a quiff or a textured top with short sides. Which one works also depends on your hair's texture and how much styling you want to do.

How do I know if my face is round or oval?

Compare length and width. A round face is about as long as it is wide; an oval face is a little longer than wide, with the forehead slightly wider than the jaw. In our measurement, a length under about 1.2 times the width reads as round, and about 1.2 to 1.45 as oval. Close-up selfies stretch the face, so take the photo from arm's length or further.

Should I get bangs if I have a round face?

Short, blunt bangs cut straight across can make a round face look shorter and wider. Longer bangs swept to one side usually work better, because they add an angle across the forehead.

Can I have short hair with a round face?

Yes, if the cut keeps some height on top and an angle at the side, such as short layers with a side-swept fringe. A very short, rounded crop that sits close all over tends to echo the roundness. For men, short is the default: keep the sides tight and leave height on top.
